Last night, England were beaten 1-0 by Northern Ireland. Irish eyes are smiling! My friends from the North are delighted. Pete from Northern Ireland told me tonight that he came out of the Underground station this morning, where someone greeted him with, 'Congratulations!' He responded with a fist-clenched, 'Yesssss!!'. She was congratulating him on his engagement to the lovely Erica!
'Sack the Swede!' is the chorus from some England fans.
Scotland won 1-2 against Norway, and suddenly the media are talking up the possibility of us reaching the World Cup. Be prepared for the next month of pundits speculating on what we need in terms of points and what permutation of results might be enough to get us through.
Typical of Scotland. Raising hopes, only to have them dashed at the last minute. Or am I being too pessimistic? No doubt we'll follow the matches on October 8th (against Belarus) and October 12th (against Slovenia), with our usual stoical appreciation of the beautiful game. (Breaks into singing, 'O Flower of Scotland).
